Public Speaking Guide

Body Language

Body language works best when it supports the message instead of competing with it.

Start from stillness

A balanced stance gives your movement somewhere to begin.

Constant movement can make the speaker look unsettled.

Gesture with purpose

Gestures are useful for size, direction, contrast, sequence, and emotion.

Do not force a gesture into every sentence.

Use your face and eyes

Facial expression should fit the meaning.

Online, look toward the camera for key sentences rather than watching yourself.

Example

When comparing two choices, one gesture to the left and one to the right can visually reinforce the contrast.

Common mistake

Repeating the same hand movement or pacing without a reason.

Try this

Record 30 seconds and watch once with the sound off. Notice whether your movement supports the message.

Keep in mind

The goal is meaningful movement, not more movement.
