How to Structure a Speech

Listeners cannot see your outline, so the structure needs to be obvious enough to hear.

Opening

Create interest and introduce the direction of the speech.

Make it clear why the topic matters.

Body

Develop two to four main ideas.

Use examples, reasons, evidence, or stories to support each one.

Conclusion

Reinforce the central message.

End with a final thought, challenge, question, or action.

Example

Hook → why it matters → point 1 → point 2 → point 3 → final takeaway.

Common mistake

Adding a brand-new major argument in the conclusion.

Try this

Outline your next speech in only six lines: Hook, Message, Point 1, Point 2, Point 3, Final line.

Keep in mind

Structure should help the audience know where they are.
