Using Humor Effectively

Humor works best when it creates warmth and fits naturally into the speech.

Use your own voice

Observation and small personal moments often work better than prepared jokes.

Do not force a style that feels unnatural.

Keep moving

If people laugh, continue after the moment lands.

If they do not, the speech should still work.

Keep it safe

Avoid humor that depends on embarrassing or targeting someone.

The audience should feel more comfortable afterward, not less.

Example

“I practiced this presentation so many times that my dog now knows the conclusion.”

Common mistake

Explaining why a joke was supposed to be funny.

Try this

Find one mildly awkward part of your topic and describe it with playful exaggeration in one sentence.

Keep in mind

Humor should support the message, not become the message.
